BALANCE AND PREVENTION OF FALLS

A natural consequence of ageing is that we lose tone and strength in our muscles, our tissues become less elastic and our balance can begin to deteriorate. Older people can be more susceptable to trips and falls.

Neuropathy, presenting as weakness and a lack of feeling in the feet, may be a complication of Diabetes or occur following chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This can lead to trips and falls but balance and gentle strengthening exercises may help restore function.

Sandymount Physiotherapy Clinic  provides exercises to improve balance by strengthening muscles, improving coordination and agility and thus preventing falls.

In order to improve our balance we have to challenge balance both statically and dynamically.

These programmes can help you or your relative to maintain or regain confidence after an adverse incident or even a period of ill health. Advice as to the best mobility aids and reinforcement of simple measures to take to prevent falls at home will be given.

Remaining safe and healthy at home and preventing fractures is the goal of this service.
